I always wondered at what precise point the old, cat-like Garfield was replaced by the current humanoid monstrosity, and why. Now we know.
(Yes, yes, the teetering and the mismatched feet didn't take, and Garfield occasionally reverts to his original self later on. What, you actually expect consistency from JIM DAVIS?)

{Garfield, on all fours, has found a pair of glasses on the ground}
Garfield: I wonder whose glasses these are
{Garfield puts on the glasses and instantly the sky darkens, he is struck by lightning and a voice booms from on high}
SFX: Zap
Voice: What the... ?! Garf, I told you not to touch my stuff! For your punishment, you'll walk upright, teeter drunkenly, and have deformed, mismatched feet... forevermore!
{Garfield takes off the glasses and throws them over his shoulder; he now walks upright, teeters drunkenly, and has deformed, mismatched feet}
