Explanation[edit | edit source]

As the strip's transcript explains, this strip takes two original Garfield strips making mention of North Dakota and stuffed them into a space shaped like the actual state of North Dakota; an empty South Dakota is also included to imply lack of any canonical mention of that state in the Garfield mythos.

The author's notes reveals the answer to the question posed in the original Garfield strips; Bismarck itself is situated in the second panel of the lower strip.

The author writes[edit | edit source]

"What is the capital of North Dakota?" definitely could have been an actual Garfield running gag. By the way, the capital of North Dakota is Bismarck.

Original strips: 2003-02-19, 2005-06-07.
