Explanation[edit | edit source]

The strip features Garfield holding a TV remote and clicking through channels. In the dialogue, Frederick II, Emperor of the Romans, appears and tells Garfield that he can't rewind back to the year 1220. Garfield responds with the Latin phrase "Stupor mundi", which means "the astonishment of the world".

The author’s commentary explains that Frederick II ruled the Holy Roman Empire from 1220 to 1250 and was known for his intelligence and effectiveness—though his reign was also marked by brutality. The phrase stupor mundi was a title given to him, reflecting his reputation in history.

The author writes[edit | edit source]

Frederick II was ruler of nebulous political entity the Holy Roman Empire from 1220 to 1250. History regards him as an effective (for which read brutal) monarch with a reputation in his own time for impressive ability and intelligence, garnering him the appellation stupor mundi - "the astonishment of the world".

Although perhaps all that proves is that sucking up to your boss has been considered wise since time immemorial.

Original strip: 2023-01-09.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

A bad piece of code on this strip's Square Root of Minus Garfield page initially off the intended rest of the first paragraph after "appellation" and italicizing everything under it, including the original strip credit and the site footer; this was quickly fixed.
