Explanation[edit | edit source]

In this strip, Jon Arbuckle declares that the house needs cleaning, prompting Garfield to confidently respond, "I'm on it." However, Jon then disappears from the scene, and Garfield remains motionless for three silent panels, completely failing to take action. Finally, in the last panel, Garfield simply notes, "There's a slice of pizza stuck to the ceiling."

The humor of this strip revolves around procrastination and selective attention—while Garfield avoids actual cleaning, he still notices an odd detail about the state of the room, but does nothing about it.

The author’s commentary reveals that they originally considered naming the strip "Garfield Plus Cube Root of Minus Garfield," but opted for the much simpler and more relatable title, Procrastination.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I wanted to originally call it "Garfield Plus Cube Root of Minus Garfield" but "Procrastination" is a much shorter and more understandable name.

Original strip: 2004-05-25.
