Explanation[edit | edit source]

In this strip, Garfield is removed entirely, leaving the stage open for other characters. Odie steps in first, performing a little dance as the audience applauds. After bowing, Odie exits, and Ren and Stimpy take his place, launching into their signature chaotic antics while dancing to Happy Happy Joy Joy. Their routine is abruptly interrupted, however, as they get pied in the face.

Ren, ever the cynic, mutters the classic showbiz advice: "Never follow a dog act." This plays on the idea that performing after a wildly unpredictable or popular act makes it harder to win over an audience—especially when the previous performer was as universally beloved as Odie.

The author explains that they had to use Ren and Stimpy for this one, reinforcing the chaotic, absurd humor typical of their franchise. They also comment on corporate naming preferences, expressing their wish for ViacomCBS to revert to simply Viacom—a name they find more appealing.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I had to use Ren and Stimpy for this one. Thus, Garfield and Ren and Stimpy are owned by Nickelodeon. (I didn't want to bother using ViacomCBS because I don't like that name. I'd rather like the company to drop CBS from the name and become "Viacom" again.)

Original strip: 1995-05-21.
