Explanation[edit | edit source]

In this strip, a group of spiders approaches Garfield while he’s asleep. The spider leader commands them to lift Garfield off the ground, still asleep, and prepare to place him in a bowl of food. Just as they’re about to complete their task, Garfield wakes up gleefully, anticipating something good is about to happen. The spider leader then announces, “Now bring in the lasagna!”

The humor comes from the absurdity of the situation—Garfield, known for his love of lasagna, is being ceremoniously lifted by spiders as if he’s about to receive a grand offering. The author notes that this is a way for the spiders to thank Garfield for not squashing them as frequently anymore.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I think spiders would thank Garfield that way for not squashing them frequently anymore.

Original strips: 1998-03-15, 2008-07-25.
