5844: All Alone on a Saturday Night?
All Alone on a Saturday Night? |
![]() Made by: ApeiroChoron |
Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip takes the 1999-07-12 original Garfield strip (originally about Jon's hands getting stuck to the counter at Irma's diner), adds the blender from the 2008-04-26 strip to Jon's face, and reworks the dialogue to work as a sequel to the 2008 original strip and by extension the Square Root of Minus Garfield running gag that spawned from that strip. The implication here is that Jon lacks the tools at his place to get the blender off his face, hence why he turned to Irma for the task.
Despite being implied to be the natural conclusion to the blender gag, this strip makes the mistake of putting the blender on the wrong side of Jon's face; 2008-04-26 showed Jon having glued the blender to his left cheek, whereas here it's glued to his right cheek (a pitfall another blender-gag sequel strip, 5478: Just Another Saturday Night, avoided by use of horizontal mirroring). As this strip actually plays out, it can only work in conjunction with other strips related to the blender gag that make the same pitfall, and not with the original Garfield strip at all.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
Here's the natural conclusion to all of those blender strips. I like the implication that Jon is such a bachelor that he doesn't have a spatula in his house.
Original strips: 1999-07-12, 2008-04-26.
Transcript[edit | edit source]
Jon {with a blender glued to his face}: Ah yes, it's good to be back at the ol' diner!
{Garfield sits to the right of Jon, looking smug}
{Irma walks into the frame}
Irma: Hi, hon! What can I get you?
Jon: For starters, a spatula
{Garfield looks surprised - probably because Irma walked face-first into the blender}
Jon: I glued a blender to my face
{Irma looks at Jon with worry}
Garfield {looking smug, speaking to the audience}: Some things never change
