5847: Oyasumi, Odie
Oyasumi, Odie |
![]() Made by: Dwight Kirb Schrute |
Explanation[edit | edit source]
In this strip, Garfield kicks Odie off the table, delivering the line, “Nobody said life was a flower garden.” But instead of the usual comedic fall, Odie plummets off a building, triggering a dramatic sequence where the sky shifts colors—from a peaceful blue to a terrifying blood red—while end credits roll, mimicking the unsettling aesthetic of the indie game OMORI.
The humor (and eerie tone) comes from blending Garfield’s slapstick antics with OMORI’s dark themes, particularly referencing the game’s bad ending. The author notes that they weren’t entirely sure where they were going with the joke but liked the idea that Odie, each time he’s kicked, experiences a moment of existential dread—similar to OMORI’s protagonist, Sunny.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
After rediscovering SRoMG and going on a reading binge, I was disappointed to find that no one had crossed over with the quite brilliant indie game OMORI (spoilers for the bad ending). I wasn't completely sure where I was going with this joke, but it seems to have the dark implication that whenever Odie is kicked off the table, he believes he is going to die, and every time, he has to process it just like Sunny does. (I refuse to believe that Garfield actually did push him off of a building.)
Kudos to anyone who gets the extra reference in the first panel.
