Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author's notes tend to explain the basic premise: a strip that turns around the logic of the "Garfield Plagiarizes Peanuts" series, this time around Garfield being the victim. The first of that series, 721: Garfield Plagiarises Peanuts, was the one that most inspired the creation of both this strip and its companion piece, iToons #694: Peanuts Plagiarizes Pearls; this strip, in particular, drops the dialogue of the first Garfield into the first Pearls Before Swine. As this strip uses the entire dialogue of the first Garfield strip wholesale and said dialogue being key to the piece, this strip's author judged it to contain "too much Garfield" for iToons standards, thus it went to Square Root of Minus Garfield. (This strip uses the American spelling of "plagiarizes"; #721, on the other hand, uses the Commonwealth spelling of the word.)

Had iToons #633: The First Week not made iToons—and by extension Square Root of Minus Garfield—readers aware GoComics had the first week of Pearls Before Swine strips missing (they still are as of this writing), odds are this strip's core imagery would be different due to a would-have-been mistaken belief that 2002-01-07 was the debut Pearls (2002-01-07 was, in fact, intended to be the debut Pearls, but one newspaper was given a one-week head start). The iToons strip in question was given credit as the source of the Pearls dialogue because of this.

The author writes[edit | edit source]

What a naughty cat...Four times, count 'em, FOUR TIMES Garfield has been caught plagiarizing poor Peanuts. Well, Garfield's karma Houdini warranty has just run out — today, the shoe is on the other foot, for today Garfield is the victim! How does Garfield feel about being plagiarized by the Pearls Before Swine crew, huh? (No offense to Pearls Before Swine, it's actually among my favorites.)

(Note: This is a companion piece to "Peanuts Plagiarizes Pearls" over on iToons. That piece, if it ran at all, has been available for quite awhile as of this piece's debut...)

Original Pearls Before Swine strip: 2001-12-31 (via iToons #633).

Original strip: 1978-06-19.
