Explanation[edit | edit source]

At the time this strip first ran, The Great Gatsby had been in the public domain in Australia (the home base of the Comic Irregulars) as well as Canada since 1991, and had recently entered the public domain in most of the European Union at the start of 2011; however, it was still copyrighted in the United States at the time this strip first ran, and would remain so until 2021.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This one only really makes sense if you've read F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, particularly chapter three, where the story finally picks up, at least from Nick's point of view (Garfield is Nick). Anyway, if you haven't read it, don't have a copy of you own, and are not in the vicinity of a library, than you should know the copyright has expired on this book and you can read the whole thing (or just chapter three) online. Happy reading!

Original strip: 2004-06-01.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Garfield: {looking bored} I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby's house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited.
Jon: {acting crazy} Woo Woo Woo!
Garfield: {looking surprised} My! A German spy!
