The 12 April 1986 strip has Garfield hold three tennis balls in his mouth, claiming it to be a new world's record, while Jon disapproves and orders him to spit them out. Nearly seven years earlier (3 June 1979), not only did Jon even encourage Garfield to store tennis balls in his mouth, but his cheeks being stuffed after spitting out the third ball suggests that he could store more than three - hardly a "new world's record" as the original strip claims.
An alternate take has Garfield say his original line ("Some people have no sense of history"), reflecting Jon's change in attitude if not memory loss:

{A flashback is set in 1979, where Garfield is sitting outside on all fours with his mouth full. He spits out a tennis ball}
Garfield: Ptooey!
{He spits out another ball}
Garfield: Ptooey!
{He spits out a third ball}
Garfield: Ptooey!
{Garfield and Jon are at a tennis court}
Jon: Okay, Garfield. Now give me some high lobs
{Garfield puts some more tennis balls in his mouth. The flashback ends. Cut to 1986 where Garfield, while standing on his hind legs, removes a tennis ball from a can and puts it in his mouth. His cheeks are stuffed with two other tennis balls}
Garfield: That was a fun time! Let's do it again!
{Garfield has three balls in his mouth and shows it to Jon}
Garfield: Fancy a game of tennis?
Jon: You spit those out this very instant!
{Garfield is displeased}
Garfield: Funny, he was okay with it back then...
