This strip essentially mashes up the two original strips; the story begins with the first two panels of the Garfield strip untouched, but for the third panel, outright deletes the unnamed woman and both characters' dialogue while replacing Jon with a colorized version of him from the Jon strip (specifically from its third panel, horizontally flipped to match the direction Jon faced in the Garfield strip).
Within the context of the original strips, the unnamed woman from the Garfield strips stands in for what is believed to be a prototype version of Liz from the Jon strip, as the Jon strip includes a punchline that was recycled into Liz's introduction storyline within Garfield proper (specifically 1979-06-30); proto-Liz stepped out of the Jon strip between panels two and three (to resurface in September closer in design to her Garfield iteration), much like the unnamed woman has been made to do in this strip.
