Explanation[edit | edit source]

In set theory, the intersection of one set with another results in a set of all the elements that are in both sets. So, for example, the set {Jon, Garfield, Odie} intersected with {Garfield, Nermal} results in just {Garfield}. Thus, the intersection of the contents of the strip Garfield with the cat Garfield results in just the cat Garfield. The author evidently considers Garfield's thought balloon to be part of Garfield.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Since Garfield Minus Garfield removes all evidence of the cartoon cat, I thought I would try a version that gets rid of everything else instead.

The original name for this idea was Garfield minus (Garfield minus Garfield) but on reflection I thought a more accurate title would be Garfield ∩ Garfield (Garfield intersect Garfield).

Original strip from 1997-01-22.
