Explanation[edit | edit source]

A factorial, written as x! is the product of all the integers between 1 and x, inclusive. For this strip, the author took the "!" and interpreted it in this way, rather than its use as language punctuation. The panel number is used for x, and the result becomes how many times the same panel is put into the same space as the original panel. But, as x increases, the result increases greatly, requiring the panels to be shrunk to accommodate them more and more. By the fourth panel, we can no longer read thoughts (though we can still see that Garfield now has the birdhouse on his head), and from the fifth panel on, we can longer tell what's going on.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Garfield factorial - I can't believe nobody else did this one yet! Especially with all the times Jon shouts "GARFIELD!"

Original strip: 1988-08-21.
