700: We Needed Some Change

Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip makes usage of the "constantly changing"/"pudding pops" running gag to make fun of and jab that particular gag; unaware of 625: Garfield Skynet Garfield: Judgment Day already waiting in the strip buffer, this strip's author may have had their own idea to attempt to curb the running gag in question with this strip.
It is likely due to how this strip makes fun of the running gag in question that this strip was the first one of the thirty-two strips part of the running gag to have been submitted while #625 was in the buffer to run; the editorial note revealed the existence of the "slow lane" that the "constantly changing"/"pudding pops" running gag was now subject to. The overall length of the Square Root of Minus Garfield strip queue nowadays has likely increased the waiting time for a "constantly changing"/"pudding pops" strip even further than stated in the editorial note.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
Take that, frozen pops! Jon needs some change! The world is unchanging! This meme was outta control!
Come on! You should know the original strip by now! If not, it's from 2001-11-28.
(Feels better now)
Editorial note: We decided to attempt to bring this meme to a conclusion with Garfield Skynet Garfield: Judgment Day, some 75 strips ago. At the time we made that strip, we had no outstanding "constantly changing/something that sounds a bit like minus/Pudding Pops" strips in the submission queue. Alas, our buffer lead time at that time was so long that in between when we made Garfield Skynet Garfield: Judgment Day and when that it was published, we had received another thirty-two submissions based on the same theme.
Many of them are very clever, being subversions or deconstructions of the idea. It would be a shame to never publish any of them. At the same time, we don't want to saturate the publication stream with variations on the same theme again. So we're going to trickle them out very infrequently - roughly once a month or so. This means the Pudding Pops strips we already have in our mailbox will last us another 2 to 3 years. You may submit more variations, but be aware that non-Pudding Pops strips will see publication about 3 years more quickly!
Original strip: 2001-11-28.
