Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original September 9th strip, Jon didn't think much of the plot of the film Lyman was going to see, and Lyman made a pun. In the original September 16th strip, Lyman's breakdown was a result of seeing his assertion that a dog is necessary for protection challenged by Garfield chasing Odie.

In this edit, Lyman breaks down... after explaining the plot of the film, for reasons the author knows.

The author's note mentions the trope of the Limited Wardrobe, in which a character has an outfit that they rarely deviate from, such as Jon's cyan shirt and Lyman's green shirt, and both of their black pants, even when the strips take place on different days. This means an editor can combine strips without jarring clothes coloring changes. (They're not walls, after all, so these things matter.)

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Limited wardrobe enables playing around with the characters' personalities with very few alterations on the original strips. It seems Lyman also has some issues.

Original strips: 1978-09-09, 1978-09-16.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: What're you doing tonight, Lyman?
Lyman: I'm gonna catch the new flick down at the Bijou.
Lyman: It's about this kid who puts a tack in his teacher's chair, and she sits on it.
{Lyman starts crying.}
Jon: {thinking} I hate to see a grown man cry.
