Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original strip, when Jon looked up to see what he thought Garfield was looking at, it was then that Garfield began to snore, causing Jon to realize that Garfield was actually sleeping.

Here, Garfield recites a Hindu mantra offering to Śiva/Shiva a respectful invocation of his name, preceded by the mystical syllable "Aum", often transcribed as "Om".

The idea is likely to have come from the similar appearance of "Om" to Jon's original "Oh".

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Om Aum Namah Shivaya

Original strip from 1989-02-01.

Transcript[edit | edit source]
