The strip's core premise is well-explained in the author's notes; this is fortunate for modern audiences, as the term "Wordle" is now primarily associated in the public awareness by an Internet word game resembling the game show Lingo that first launched in October 2021.

Wordle, available at www.wordle.net, uses a bunch of text to generate a word cloud in which words that occur more often are larger. This one was made using dialogue (but not sound effects or character names) from ten randomly selected Garfield strips.
