Explanation[edit | edit source]
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
When browsing through the strips featuring Garfield's rubber chicken Stretch, this one practically wrote itself.
This is, of course, a reference to John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, a classic American novel which has become the bane of many a high school student assigned to read it. Keen-eyed fans will notice that Garfield's first line is actually a bit of Looney Tunes culture - it's a quote from the Abominable Snowman. I have no idea if it appears in Steinbeck's original text. I've never been assigned to read it.
Original strips: 1984-06-22, 1984-09-03.
Transcript[edit | edit source]
Garfield: And I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him—
SFX: crack {A cracking sound from the chicken's neck.}
Garfield: I done a bad thing...
Jon: It don't make no difference...
