Explanation[edit | edit source]

"Grimdull" is a portmanteau of "grimdark" (already portmanteau of "Grim" and "Dark") and "dull". In this case, "grim" because Garfield is apparently dead, but "dull" because Jon seems to have no real emotional reaction as he informs the person on the other end of the telephone call of this fact.

The author references a previous work in which he had Garfield encourage Vincent van Gogh to cut off an ear; that was his 4th strip overall (ignoring relative stupidity), while this strip was his 41st (again, ignoring relative stupidity). However, order of publication is not necessarily the same as order of creation or submission, so it may be impossible to tell, even if one knows which ones the author considers stupid.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Every time I promise myself I'll never do something this stupid again, I find myself thinking up something even dumber. This strip is probably exhibit A of that fact.

Or maybe exhibit G. I may have lost count shortly after "Garfield Plus High Art Minus Good Taste".

Original strip: 2013-09-06.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon is on the phone, Garfield is beside him, motionless}
Jon: One second, let me get a pen.
{Jon looks around, sees Garfield, apparently dead}
Jon: Gotta go, I think my cat just died.

Notes[edit | edit source]

1764: Baby, It's Cold Inside, by the same author, would link back to this strip, as it was a possible "Exhibit H".
