Explanation[edit | edit source]

In this strip, the author takes advantage of the fact that "vet" is commonly short for two things: "veterinarian" and "veteran". The original strip has the former in the form of Liz, Garfield's vet since 1979. In that, Liz was presumably "funny" because she thought she might stop him from drinking coffee just by telling him cats shouldn't. Here is the latter in the form of Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, who had fought in World War II. He's probably "funny" for "his" play on words, as if he could use his veteran status to back up his advice on pet health.

This strip was also run on Veterans' Day of 2015, further cementing in these themes.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

A salute to real veterans; the world would be much different without you.

This is one of a few strips I chose based on the repeating numbers in the date.

Original strip: 2009-09-09.
