Explanation[edit | edit source]

This is gonna take quite some explaining to do. This strip is a reference to daylight saving time (DST), which, quoth Wikipedia, is " is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months so that evening daylight lasts longer, while sacrificing normal sunrise times." Of course, the exact periods during which it is observed vary by country. In the United States (save for certain areas), it begins on the second Sunday in March (the "spring forward" period, during which the clock goes forward by an hour) and ends on the first Sunday in November (the "fall back" period, during which the clock goes back an hour). This, inevitably, has caused controversy - as well as the loss of an hour of sleep, there is also a slight increase in car accidents and heart attacks, among other issues. This has led to proponents to abolish DST altogether; as mentioned, certain areas of the United States do not observe DST.

As explained by the author, they created this submission during the "spring forward" period, being inspired to do so after losing an hour of sleep. It came out of the buffer as DST was coming to a close, so while the author wasn't wrong to assume that their submission would be "completely irrelevant", it is relevant to a respect. In fact, original strip involved Garfield saying, "Let the bad times roll!", which can be interpreted to be a jab at DST given the context. In any case, the message here is clear: DST isn't such a good idea.

The title of the strip refers to the fact that it is sometimes called "daylight savings time".

The author writes[edit | edit source]

I was inspired to make this when my parents dragged me to church this morning against my will because they think I'm a sinner apostate or something and I wasn't done sleeping yet. It didn't help that all the clocks went forward last night, so I lost an hour of sleep.

Obviously this strip will be completely irrelevant by the time it comes out of the buffer.

THE STRUGGLE TO STAY AWAKE IS REAL.

Original strip: 2004-04-26.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon is at the table with a mug of coffee in one hand and holding his chin up with the other, looking very tired. His hair is messy and he hasn't shaved yet. Odie trudges in, looking even more tired, cranky, and unkempt than Jon is.}
{Odie sits down next to Jon, putting his chin in his paw as well. A grumpy-looking Garfield walks in next, almost looking like he spent the night partying and is now suffering from a hangover. His whiskers are all messed up and he has random hairs sticking out everywhere.}
Garfield: {turns to the reader} Don't you just hate it when daylight saving time starts?!
