Explanation[edit | edit source]

"Garfield Tips The Scales" refers to Garfield Tips the Scales: His Eighth Book, a Garfield strip collection book in which this strip's original credited Garfield strips were collected.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I have this strip in Garfield Tips the Scales and realized fairly quickly that the real humor potential, at least in my opinion, lay in Garfield and Jon's exchange in the second and third panels, with the rest of the strip being "meh". Discord agreed with me, and so this was made, condensing the Sunday strip into a pseudo-daily.

If one wanted to really milk this, this could actually be stretched into a four-day "arc," comprising a strip built around the opening panel, a strip with a gag about Garfield's amount of "tubby toys", a strip containing the "real" punchline, and this.

Original strips: 1983-01-04, 1983-01-16, 1983-02-13.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{A bubble bath has been prepared, probably for Garfield, unless Jon is secretly an incredible record-breaking contortionist}
Jon: Garfield, why don't you like to take baths?
Garfield: Bathing robs cats of precious natural oils that protect us from skin disease
{beat panel; Jon's eyes widen as if he has somehow telepathically understood Garfield}
Jon: What do you know? You're just a stupid cat
Garfield {exiting}: Aaand pot, meet kettle
