Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip takes a panel from a Garfield strip and uses it to punchline the setup of a Dilbert strip. It implies that Jon managed to pick up a Tanzanian necktie snake and attempted to wear it as if it were an actual tie.

The author's notes imply that they could only find Garfield strips smaller than Dilbert strips (the latter of which were more readily available at the time of submission than as of this writing, see the Trivia section below). Not knowing when this strip was created or submitted, they may not have known about the strip archive once hosted on garfield.com, and even if they knew that strip archive had been taken down in the middle of 2020, they may also not have known that the Garfield wiki on Fandom preserved that version of the strip (it can be seen here--that version of the strip is 355 pixels in height including white space, compared to the 307 pixel height of the output of the Dilbert strip used in this strip with white space cropped. This implies they used an archive with smaller strips than the former garfield.com version; at the time this strip first ran, the source links Square Root of Minus Garfield used were to the now-busted unsecured "images.ucomics.com" domain, with the original Garfield strip being 177 pixels in height including whitespace (that version of the strip is still available through a secure-domain mirror), and the version mainly made available on GoComics, the current source of the links of SRoMG credits, uses a 265-pixel height including whitespace, both versions of which would need to be blown up to match the height of the Dilbert strip used.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Thus illustrating the danger of buying clothes from the op-shop.

Unfortunately, the only Garfield strips I can find are smaller than the Dilbert strips. They looked disparate next to each other unchanged, so I decided to blow up the Garfield strip rather than shrink the Dilbert strip.

Original Dilbert strip: 1991-05-10.

Original strip: 2002-07-17.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Dogbert: Mister Garbage Man, do you know why Dilbert's neckties curl up?
Garbage Man: It could be a Tanzanian necktie snake in one of its clever disguises.
Garbage Man: They'll stalk you for years, then suddenly - ACK!!
{Meanwhile...}
Jon: This isn't a tie! It's a snake!

Trivia[edit | edit source]

The author did not provide a link to the Dilbert strip used for this strip. Even if they had, said link would have likely gone dead in the early parts of 2023 after Dilbert's author fell into heavy controversy, with Dilbert being dropped by its syndicate as a result.
