Explanation[edit | edit source]

Another in the series of strips in which Garfield does not actually exist but Jon pretends he does, and therefore all of Garfield's thoughts actually originate with him, this time, Jon has decided to give his cat a bath. Having prepared a real tub of real soap and real water -- one wonders what he ends up doing with it, since he's not actually bathing a cat, either way -- he, knowing that his imaginary cat will not want to take a bath, he imagines him sneaking around and hiding in an attempt to avoid it. He must also maintain the pretense that he doesn't know where his cat "is", even though his imagination does.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Maintaining the fiction that Jon has a cat can be hard work.

Original Strip 1978-07-16.
