Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Environmental storytelling is the method of conveying narrative information not through direct text but through objects arranged in (you may want to sit down for this next bit) an environment: a physical environment, like the mise en scène of a theme park, or (more usually) a virtual environment, as in the world of a video game.

Alternatively, to quote games designer Ben Esposito's definition, "in game design, "environmental storytelling" is the art of placing skulls near a toilet".

Original strip: 2002-02-19.
