Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

The creator of the previous SRoMG based on this joke took umbrage with the fact that the spider who had to pay an arm and several legs' worth to buy a bouquet still had all his limbs. In the name of accuracy they corrected the strip by removing the arachnid's limbs. However, there's another way to run this jest. Namely keeping the wording identical to the human phrase whilst removing one arm and one leg from the spider. Something a little more difficult to notice, but then Garfield has always been about subtle humor. (In this case so subtle you probably won't notice any funny at all.)

Original strip: 2008-02-15.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Spider: What did you get your wife for Valentine's Day, Hank?
Hank: A bouquet of dead gnats
Spider: Wow, that must have cost you plenty!
Hank: Yeah, it did
Hank: It cost me an arm and a leg.
{Hank is missing his upper left and lower right limbs, leaving him with six}
