Explanation[edit | edit source]

This is an imitation of the type of political cartoon that uses objects or people to symbolize other people or ideas. Here Garfield, representing consumerism, kicks Odie, representing the future, off a table. The obvious implication would be that the political cartoonist believes that consumerism is harmful for a culture's future prospects. Given that Garfield has a habit of kicking Odie off the table, there may also be an implication that consumerism continually and willfully does harm to the future. There may be a further intention of ascribing Garfield's characteristics to consumerism and Odie's characteristics to the concept of "the future".
