Explanation[edit | edit source]
In the original strip, Garfield is absent from the third panel, making it look like he ditched Jon while he was reading. Here, Garfield is in the third panel, walking away shivering (like he did in 1979-02-09 to get Jon to turn the heat up), making it look like he's disturbed by the poem's content (which is about a toad who got run over).
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
There's just something about peeling a toad that creeps me out.
Original strips: 1979-02-09, 1979-05-03.
Transcript[edit | edit source]
Jon: Tell me what you think of my new poem, Garfield.
{Poem is titled "My Buddy"}
Poem: I have a buddy.
My buddy's a toad.
He's kind of muddy,
He's flat on the road.
But, he is my buddy,
My buddy to stay.
'Til he's peeled up
And sailed away.
{Garfield walks away trembling}
Jon: Garfield?
