1593: All Your Garfield Are Belong To Us

Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip takes the original Garfield strip, originally about Jon drinking expired milk, and makes fun of Internet memes by replacing Jon with a screenshot of the memetic line of CATS's infamous line from the European Sega Mega Drive port of Zero Wing; while the original arcade version of the game did first release in 1989, the infamous Engrish dialogue was written for a July 1991 console release. (Contrary to some popular belief stemming from the memetic popularity of the line, that particular port never saw a contemporary North American Sega Genesis release; the North American Genesis release was an aftermarket release in 2020, and did not see widespread release until it joined the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass collection of games for the Genesis/Mega Drive in 2022.) The author's notes makes mention of LOLcats and attempts to liken CATS from Zero Wing to the meme based on the character's name.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
Because memes are just as perishable as dairy products (although their expiration dates aren't usually printed on the packaging). I was looking for one of the first LOLCATs, and realised that, since the name of the Alien Enemy shown here is CATS, this was probably it.
Original strip: 2013-01-17.
