In the original 1992 birthday strip, Jon wasn't expecting Garfield to pull out a large hair dryer for his cake, as the cake wasn't even that big. This strip edits the final panel of the original by having Jon not bring out the cake when Garfield returns with the hair dryer, then tacks on the final two panels of a 1994 strip where Garfield replaced the burnt-out fridge lightbulb with a larger normal lightbulb, causing the entire house to be flooded with a bright light when Jon opens it later that night. The fifth and final panel overall makes it look like Garfield's cake is bright enough to illuminate the entire house, justifying the hair dryer.
