Explanation[edit | edit source]
The diagrams, equations, and other formulas found in this comic are not randomly chosen, but are connected to the dialogue in the original strip.
Original dialogue | Corresponding equation/diagram | Meaning | Relevance |
---|---|---|---|
Garfield: I say, "why diet?" I say, "why don't they do something about gravity?" | Gm1×m2 / r2 | Newton's law of universal gravitation: as Wikipedia puts it, "any two bodies in the Universe attract each other with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them." | This one is pretty obvious, since the original line explicitly mentioned gravity. |
Jon: This is it, Garfield! I've made up my mind! I'm throwing them out! | F1,2 = -F2,1 | Newton's third law of motion - every action has an equal and opposite reaction. | Most likely referring to Jon forcefully removing "them", and possibly referring to him reacting to their continued existence (which is technically an action). |
Garfield: Attaboy! Go get 'em! | F = ma | Newton's second law - force = mass times acceleration. | Presumably related to Jon's line (another law of motion). It's possible that the acceleration part relates to "go get 'em" in some way. |
Jon: Okay, time to go! | Δt = Δτ/√(1-v2/c2) | Time dilation - simply put, when a point in time appears differently depending on where the observer is located. | This was simply chosen because of the word "time". |
Jon: Hey! What're you doing?! Wha... whoa... -wha?!... Hey! Wait a minute!! | p = mv | Linear momentum = mass times velocity. | Presumably relates to Jon's attackers preparing to beat him up. |
Jon: YAAHHH!!! OOF! | [an image] | A diagram of a pain receptor. | It's kind of obvious why this was chosen. |
Jon: YEOOOWCH! OW! OW! OW! GAAAAAAAAG... YAAAAAHH! | [another image] | A picture of an oxygen molecule (O2). | This relates to Jon getting choked. |
Garfield: When leftovers get old they can turn mean. | ∆θ = θ2 - θ1 | The angular displacement of a vector equals the second vector subtracted by the first. | This is kind of a pun relating to the leftovers turning mean. |
Oh, and the reference to "Garffiti" seems to be mainly in the equations all over the background of one panel of that strip.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
If you ask me why I decided to replace every line of dialogue in this strip with scientific formulae and diagrams... I don't know. But I did try to pick ones relevant to the original dialogue... though sometimes it takes punny thinking to figure out said relevance.
Inspired by No. 440: Garffiti.
All equations and diagrams lifted from Wikipedia.
Original strip: 1989-09-10.
