Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

It occurred to me that, based on the formula of Garfield strips involving Jon not being able to read Garfield's thoughts, and instead responding only to his body language (or lack thereof), there was no reason Jon should take a pause for Garfield to "think" his greeting to the readers. This is how I imagine the first "take" of the seminal Garfield strip would go.

As you can see, it did not quite get off the ground sans hitch.

Original strip: 1978-06-19.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Hi, there... I'm Jon. I'm a cartoonist, and this is my cat, Garfield.
Garfield: Hi, there. I'm Garfield. I'm a cat, and this is my cartoonist, Jon.
Jon: {talking over Garfield} Our only thought is to entertain you.
Garfield: Hey, peabrain! Wait your turn. I'm not done talking yet.
