The author writes:[edit | edit source]
I was surprised to see that there apparently weren't already more simple ciphers in the comic - or maybe they just didn't use the same words I did in my search filter. Hopefully, this is the first Vigenère cipher comic on the site. Luckily for me, there happened to also be a Garfield strip about secret messages. Feel free to research the cipher type on your own and try to decode this, since you have the solution readily available to check against, or just use this handy tool to quickly do that for you instead*.
All code is divided into four letter segments - that is one of the most traditional ways to present a code string. This has no relevance to the actual length of the words - "I like lasagna" would be written "ILIK ELAS AGNA" even though "lasagna" is much more than four letters long. The strings of extra Zs at the end of some sentences are just filler letters to keep up the 4 letter divides, so don't worry if you notice some nonsense at the end of a phrase.
*[Ed: Note that each line is translated individually - the dialogue does not form one continuous ciphertext.]
Original strip: 1998-10-15.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
This strip's author's notes were hit by mojibake errors in a later site recoding effort; the original author's notes unaffected by mojibake are currently lost to the public due to this.
