Explanation[edit | edit source]

Simply, the author replaced all of the dialogue with palindromes from "Weird Al" Yankovic's song Bob, from the album Poodle Hat.

A palindrome is a sequence of characters that are the same whether you read them backward or forward. For the purposes of sentences, this often, by necessity, ignores capitalization, punctuation, and word dividers.

Also, as lasagna is Garfield's Trademark Favorite Food, a line indicating that Garfield "pigs out" on lasagna is quite apt for him to say.

"Rag" or "ragtime" is a genre of music from the late 19th and early 20th century; it is mainly mentioned to make the strip title a palindrome.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

All I'll say is that A: I got all the palindromes from "Weird Al" Yankovic's song Bob, and B: that last line is perfect for Garfield.

Original strip: 1984-02-13.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: A dog, a panic in a pagoda.
Jon: Was it a car or a cat I saw?
Garfield: Senile felines.
Garfield: Go hang a salami, I'm a lasagna hog.
