Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This immediately came into mind when I read the original strip and it raises quite a few questions. Why does the fish talk? How can it survive in a hot costume? When did the fish replace Garfield? Is the honest-and-true-Garfield dead? More news at 11.

Original strips: 2014-04-09, 2014-10-03, 2015-11-22.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon is looking at the fishbowl with a forlorn expression. Garfield, practically lifeless, stares on into the bowl}
Jon: I remember a happy fishbowl
Jon: I remember a frisky little fish
{Jon is practically on the verge of tears; there are bags under his eyes as he reminisces about his saltwater friend}
Jon: Where have all the memories gone?
{Jon shuffles away wistfully, thinking of the large fishbowl-shaped hole in his heart. But alas, "Garfield" takes off his head to reveal a face that was previously presumed deceased. The fish looks toward Jon with an evil glare, thinking of just what he's going to do next}
Fish: Mortal fool
