Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip makes reference to the then-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the second of a three-day stretch of Square Root of Minus Garfield strips making some sort of reference to said pandemic, by having Jon reveal he's surprised that his cat has yet to contract the disease; a slight reword of the first panel (which originally referenced Jon having a cold) and a mask drawn onto Garfield in the third panel are used to create the COVID-19 related context. A link within the transcript was designed to lead to information to encourage readership to take precautionary measures.

Comparison between this remixed strip and the original Garfield strip could potentially create an interpretation of this strip implying Jon had come down with COVID-19, the spread of which could create Jon's expectation that Garfield might have also come down with the disease during the time Jon was infected.

I couldn't resist after randomly stumbling upon this comic.

Original strip: 2009-10-24.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon {to Garfield}: I'm surprised you haven't caught corona yet
Jon: Are you even listening to me?
Garfield {looking up, revealing he is taking precautions and wearing a face mask}: Pardon?
