Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip is essentially a restored and colorized edition of a bespoke one-shot edition of Garfield made specifically for the Chicago Sun-Times to commemorate Garfield's return to that newspaper. The first panel is essentially a dramatization of Garfield being removed from the paper on 1978-10-02 in an apparent misjudging of Garfield's popularity, the second panel is a depiction of the Sun-Times's comics manager being flooded with calls from fans wanting Garfield, and the third panel is essentially a dramatization of Garfield's return to the paper. It is unknown whether the stickers depicted on Garfield's suitcase shown in the third panel were on the suitcase in the first panel but not shown there due to the suitcase being shown from the opposite side on the first panel.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

So, one day I was browsing Twitter, as you do, and found this tweet. Ignoring the topic of Garfield's feet, it had a comic I never seen before, most likely about Garfield being pulled from newspapers for a bit. Seeing an opportunity, I decided to 'restore' it, so to speak, by coloring it.

You may use this in your submissions if you please, no credit needed! :)

Original strip: (presumably) 1978-10-16

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{We see a building called "Sun-Times", with a man standing partly outside of the front door, pointing to the right. He is looking down at Garfield, who is crying and carrying a suitcase}
Top Left Box: October 2, 1978
Garfield: WAH!
{Later, we see the man again, this time he is getting angry phone calls, revealing to us that he is a newspaper editor}
Top Left Box: Later...
Phone #1: WHERE'S GARFIELD?!
Phone #2: WE WANT GARFIELD!
{Some time has passed, and we see Garfield walking into a building, presumably "Sun-Times", as we can see a pair of legs standing to the left of the panel. Garfield is pleased, carrying his suitcase}
Top Left Box: October 16, 1978
Garfield: Thank you for having me back, Chicago!!
{Who knew there was a big Garfield demand in Chicago?}

Trivia[edit | edit source]

There is no link to the original strip date due to it not actually being based on the general Garfield strip for 1978-10-16.
