Explanation

This is the first installment of the Garfield Numerosity series, based on the Numerosity series from Sesame Street. Numerosity, directed by Jim Henson, is made of 10 films, each centering on a different number from 1-10. Each film is comprised of 6 scenes, each one showing different characters using different items to represent each number. The final scene was always the same, with a baker (voiced by Henson and portrayed by stuntman Alex Stevens) trying and failing to walk down a flight of stairs while holding the film's number in desserts. This series of edits is made of 5-panel comics, with each panel recreating the scenes in each Numerosity film. The baker's scenes, however, are never recreated.

This comic adapts the first film, which centers around the number 1. That film ended with a wedding cake, but that scene isn't adapted. Here's each panel of the comic in order:

• 1 penny: This panel uses an image of Garfield flipping a coin. The author's notes don't properly credit the image's true source, leaving it unknown. They credit the panel as coming from the 1981-01-06 comic, but it uses a different art style and doesn't feature anything even remotely resembling the image.
• 1 bird: This panel uses the first panel of a comic (1996-10-03) where Garfield tries to trick a bird into going into his mouth with claims of a cat in the neighborhood, which fails because the bird recognizes Garfield as a cat.
• 1 eye: This panel uses the third panel of a comic (1981-01-16) where Garfield passes by a dog with only one eye, which he calls "a seeing eye dog". According to the author's notes, the film that inspired this comic used a wind-up toy for this scene, but Captain Lhurgoyf chose to go by what the script said and used an eye scene instead.
• 1 cow: This panel uses the second panel of a comic (2018-09-28) where Jon tries to cook hamburgers outside, only to get attacked by a bipedal cow who understandably didn't approve of what he was doing. According to the author's notes, the film that inspired this comic was originally going to use an elephant for this scene.
• 1 belly button: This panel uses the final panel of a comic (1995-08-13) where Garfield watches Jon try to hit on a nurse while sitting at a park bench. In the original comic, Jon lifted his short to show the nurse a scar he got from an appendectomy, but she left, and a police officer took her place.

The author writes:

Based on a Numerosity segment from Sesame Street, it counts five different sets of features.

In the original script, an eye and an elephant were going be counted in along with the penny, bird, and belly button, but were replaced by the wind-up toy and cow in the final film. I however used one eye for the third feature according to the original script.

1981-01-06 appears to be miscredited among the original strip credits, specifically being miscredited as the "one penny" panel (the other four credited strips can indeed be correctly attributed); however, it is unknown the actual strip--or actual piece of Garfield material--that actually contributes to the "one penny" panel
