The author writes:[edit | edit source]
Peanuts had Snoopy writing the opening lines to Paul Clifford by Edward G. E. Bulwer-Lytton. This Sunday*, Sally Forth has topped that by adapting the opening lines of Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. It seems that Garfield is missing out on this, and we have amended the situation by offering the opening lines to another great work of literature: A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge.
(Please note that the above does not imply that Paul Clifford was a good book).
