Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip references the higher than normal turnover rate in the position of prime minister of the United Kingdom in the years leading up to the date this strip first ran; between the start of 2022 and the strip's run date, the United Kingdom had seen four prime ministers in the post: Boris Johnson (July 2019-September 2022), Liz Truss (September 2022-October 2022), Rishi Sunak (October 2022-July 2024), and Keir Starmer (July 2024-present as of this writing). Johnson, Truss, and Sunak each first took the post upon their predecessor resigning (as did Johnson's predecessor Theresa May).
The author, as stated in their notes, made this strip in November 2022, shortly after Sunak took office. This strip, however, wasn't sent until July 2024, either during the leadup to the UK general election that month or shortly after it, and fast-tracked through the queue while still topical. Despite the short ten-day timeframe, it is difficult to analyze exactly when it was sent in; the exit polling during the campaign phase leading up to the election had suggested Sunak's party would take heavy losses in the election, and indeed Sunak's party lost 251 notional seats in comparison to the 2019 general election (the seat change being notional due to boundary changes between general elections)--the worst result ever for Sunak's party and the second-best result ever for Starmer's, although percentage-wise not quite the wipeout compared to the 1993 Canadian election that had seen some comparisons in the leadup to election day.
This strip's title is taken from a line from 4901: Little Gemfield, which itself referenced the early part of the political turbulence that ultimately resulted in the change in government this strip was submitted to reference.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
I made this back in November 2022, but the July 2024 General Election inspired me to send it in. Better late than never, I guess.
Title from SRoMG #4901 "Little Gemfield".
Original strip: 2001-11-28.
