Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip recolors Jon in the final panel to resemble the Puppet from the Five Nights at Freddy's series, and adjusts the dialogue to portray himself as string-bound rather than muscle-bound and about to go on a date with Cassidy, another FNaF series character.

The author's notes make note of coloring differences between varying archives:

  • The statement of UComics being "down" implies that this strip was made and submitted during the period between when the non-secure "images.ucomics.com" domain Square Root of Minus Garfield had been using for original strip credits hopelessly busted and Square Root of Minus Garfield switched the strip credit linking to lead to GoComics; what had been the secure-domain mirror of the UComics domain is still functional, it shows Jon's mime costume as black in color. Despite the author's notes implying otherwise, this appears to be the source the author used to get the original strip, as the other listed archives are bigger in size than from this particular archive (the author could not have sourced the strip wholesale from another Square Root of Minus Garfield strip, as the SRoMG strip that was the author's "third opinion", 757: Jon Arbuckle 2001 Random Montage, only sourced one panel from it and was the only strip to source from the original Garfield strip prior to this strip).
  • The "Wikia version" refers to the collection of strips hosted on the Garfield wiki on Fandom (the wiki farm previously known as Wikia), which for strips originally published prior to the takedown of garfield.com were sourced from that website; it shows Jon's mime costume as black in color. As garfield.com was the Garfield franchise's official website, it is presumed that this is the official colorization and implies Garfield Survival of the Fattest: His 40th Book also has Jon's mime costume in black.
  • GoComics, on the other hand, has been known to apply color schemes of their own to Garfield strips that often differ from those of other archives, with older strips rendered at 900 pixels wide often having wildly different color schemes (refer to the explanation of 5399: Color me Garfield for examples of wild color scheme variance) as opposed to later ones not varying as wildly; this particular rendition is the one that rendered Jon's mime costume in white.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

For some reason, the Gocomics version has the costume that the entity (presumably Jon, though it's never explicitly confirmed) wears in white, whereas the Wikia version has it in black, and this other SRoMG has it in black again. Since UComics is down, I can't get a fourth opinion.

Either way, it looks like the Puppet.

Original strip: 2001-11-02.
