5811: Garfield for the Modern Age (A Retrospective on the Cartoon Life of a Thinking Housecat): Act II
Garfield for the Modern Age (A Retrospective on the Cartoon Life of a Thinking Housecat): Act II |
![]() Made by: Wibi |
Explanation[edit | edit source]
In this strip, Jon's mouth is backwards, and he tosses a banana next to Garfield, who responds with a cryptic phrase: "Happy breakfast, banan. Here's aa Garfield for diet." The comic quickly descends into visual and linguistic distortion, with Garfield momentarily gaining bunny ears, holding the banana like a gun, and Jon's facial features becoming increasingly warped. The middle panel is rotated, featuring a suspended, sourceless thought that simply states "WHY". The final panel sees Jon pointing with an elongated finger, uttering "???????????? Die, Garfield", to which Garfield smugly replies, "You book." Jon then opens a book and seemingly disappears.
The author includes a note referencing Cabaret Voltaire's 1983 album The Crackdown, specifically the track "Why Kill Time (When You Can Kill Yourself)", though they clarify that this is purely coincidental.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
Cabaret Voltaire released their 5th studio album The Crackdown on August 18th 1983, featuring such upbeat spacey tracks as "Why Kill Time (When You Can Kill Yourself)". This is actually a coincidence.
Original strips: 1983-08-17, 1983-08-18, 1983-08-19.
