Explanation[edit | edit source]

Garfield answers a phone call, only to hear the generic inquiry, "May I speak to the man of the house?" However, before Garfield can respond, a featherless chicken walks into the frame. Garfield then retorts, "Define 'man'." The humor here stems from both the absurd presence of the chicken and the existential implications of Garfield's response—questioning identity, categorization, and perhaps even the philosophical nature of what it means to be "the man of the house."

The author amusingly notes that the speech bubble positioning unintentionally makes it appear as though the chicken is the one pondering its own status, adding an extra layer of ironic absurdity.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I only noticed it after making the strip, but the weird direction of the speech/thought bubble makes it seem like the chicken is thinking and not Garfield. Considering the concept of this chicken shrewdly trying to defend itself being a man is somewhat funny, please pretend I came up with this on purpose.

Original strip: 1997-06-27.
