Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip takes the original Pearls Before Swine strip and transplants its dialogue wholesale into the final panel of the original Garfield strip. The original Garfield strip involved Jon angrily confronting Garfield over the loss of a large number of pet fish, a similar subject to what the original Pearls Before Swine strip covered (the implication in both the original Pearls Before Swine strip and this strip is that "Reality" ate both "Hope" and "Dreams"). The dialogue isn't properly synchronized, however; in panel 1, Garfield uses Rat's line and Jon uses Pig's line, but in panels 2 and 3 Jon uses Rat's line and Garfield uses Pig's lines.

This strip is not the last time a Square Root of Minus Garfield strip would be named "Garfield Before Swine"; 4711: Garfield Before Swine, another fusion of Garfield and Pearls Before Swine elements, also bore that title.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

The dialogue here is from the comic strip Pearls Before Swine, drawn by Stephan Pastis. The strip centres around the arrogant, self-centred Rat, and the dim-witted, naive Pig.

Original Pearls Before Swine strip: 2003-10-07.

Original strip: 2002-02-21.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Garfield: How are your new fish doing?
Jon: Not good... I can't find "Hope" and "Dreams!"
Jon: What happened to them?
Garfield: I don't know...
Garfield: ...but "Reality" is fatter than ever.
