Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip takes the original Pearls Before Swine strip and switches out its second panel with the final panel of the original Garfield strip, slightly tweaking Rat's dialogue in the first panel to reflect the change of target character (Pig in the original Pearls Before Swine strip, Garfield in this strip). The panel swapped out from the Pearls Before Swine strip involved a broken window, similar to the panel swapped in from the Garfield strip. The strip's name plays on the names of both source strips.

This strip is not the first time a Square Root of Minus Garfield strip was named "Garfield Before Swine"; 1083: Garfield Before Swine, another fusion of Garfield and Pearls Before Swine elements, also bore that title.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

An homage to one of my favorite comic strips (along with SRoMG), Pearls Before Swine. I was scrolling through the SRoMG archive and I got to the series of strips based on 1981-03-29, and my mind went to the PBS 2012-09-24 strip, in which Pig also gets 'defenestrated'. Vocabulary! It's fun!

Original Pearls Before Swine strip: 2012-09-24.

Original strip: 1981-03-29.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Rat: I'm expanding Gar's vocabulary. Today's word was 'defenestration', which means the act of throwing someone out a window.
Goat: That's great. What have you found is the best way of teaching new words?
{Cut to Garfield getting thrown out of a window}
Rat: Learning can be a painful process.
