Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, Garfield's head was intact (albeit with steam coming out of his ears). Here, his head is on fire (a slightly more realistic outcome, since cat hair can burn - and, you know, he just ate burning candles). For whatever reason, Jon is no less alarmed than before.

The author's notes leave the outcome of this situation up to the reader - after all, Garfield uses negative continuity to a tee.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Whether or not Garfield survived this abrupt tragedy is an exercise left to the reader.

Original strip: 1982-06-19.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Happy Birthday, Garfield!
{A cake sits between Garfield and him; Garfield looks excited}
{Garfield unexpectedly gulps down the cake in one bite - Jon looks shocked}
SFX: GULP!
{Garfield's head is now on fire and billowing smoke, but Jon doesn't panic}
Jon: Maybe you should have blown out the candles first.
