Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original base strip, Jon was the giver of the rubber chicken, and Odie was the target of the smack. Garfield's reaction is taken from a strip in which Pookie is hit in the face with a pie.

This edit references My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - more specifically, the episode "Pinkie Pride". The episode was part of a season-long arc wherein the main sextet of ponies discovered a box with six keyholes (after an adventure that required them to give up their Elements of Harmony - essentially, friendship-powered villain-slaying macguffins). Throughout the season, certain episodes focused on one of the six and ended with them receiving an object from another pony that gave off a rainbow glow. "Pinkie Pride" focused on the semi-titular Pinkie Pie getting into a feud with fellow goofy party-planner Cheese Sandwich (voiced by "Weird Al" Yankovic), and once their conflict is resolved he gives her his rubber chicken. The season finale ("Twilight's Kingdom") reveals that the rubber chicken (along with the other ponies' objects) were actually keys that only took on their true form when brought to the aforementioned box.

Whether the rubber chicken here is intended to be Boneless (the name of the chicken Cheese Sandwich has for most of the episode), Boneless 2 (the one he's revealed to have after he gives Boneless to Pinkie), or some other chicken entirely, is left up in the air.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Saw Twilight's Kingdom, then looked at the unclaimed June 19ths for the big "1978-2014" celebration and this was among them. I know what I had to do.

Original strips: 1984-06-19, 1984-07-05.
