Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the *Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy* series, a smart galactic hitchhiker is never caught without a towel. Here, Garfield intends to hitchhike to the Restaurant (a location in that series) and pay for his meal with Jon's credit card.
Sass, hoopy, and frood are all slang from the series.
The series begins with the Vogons blowing up Earth. It's revealed that the dolphins escaped shortly before the destruction, with a final message to humanity of "So long, and thanks for all the fish."

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

You sass that hoopy Garfield? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is.
Alternate, darker second thought bubble that is also in-character for Garfield: "The Vogons are about to blow up Earth. So long and thanks for all the lasagna."

Original strip: 1991-10-30.
