Explanation[edit | edit source]

This comic discards the 3-panel limitation in order to make Garfield slow and the snail fast. This is achieved by starting with an empty thought balloon, giving each word in Garfield's assertion its own panel, and making Garfield fail to react immediately after, while the snail says his entire phrase in one panel, immediately as Garfield stops.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

So my thought was, "What if it was Garfield who was slow?" So here, his thought takes an extra panel to truly get going, each word takes up its own panel, and when the snail has responded, Garfield takes a beat panel to realize that the snail, by contrast, was ready to think-speak as soon as Garfield was done, and thought all four words in one panel.

Original strip: 2005-03-14.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Garfield's eyes open wide as he realizes, perhaps, just who's slow around here.}
